Continue of the History of the Scottie Terriers

There is one person that played an important role in the History of the Scottish terrier’s. It was King James VI and he became James I of England in the 17th Century. King James sent six Scottie Terriers to the French monarch as a gift; because of his love and his adoration for the Scotties the breed increased their popularity throughout the world.
In the 19th century most of the dog writers seem to agree that there were two varieties of the existing in Britain at the time. The one was a rough haired so called Scotch terrier and the other one was a smooth haired English Terrier.
In 1829 Thomas Brown in his book Biological Sketches and Authentic Anecdotes of Dog he say that "the Scotch terrier is certainly the purest in point of breed and the (smooth) English seems to have been produced by a cross from him". Brown describe the Scotch Terriers "low in stature, with a strong muscular body, short stout legs, a head large in proportion to the body and was generally of a sandy colour or black with a long matted and hard coat".

The Scottish Terriers is developed for hunting small animals in the Scottish Highlands in the early 19th century. A description that shares characteristics with what was once known as the Aberdeen Terrier and is today known as the Scottish Terrier. In the paintings of Sir Edwin Landseer and an 1835 lithograph entitled "Scottish Terriers at Work on a Cairn in the West Highlands both depict Scottie Type Terriers very similar to those described in the first Scottish Terrier Standard".

The history of the Scottish Terrier

The several grouping of  the highland Terriers including the Scottie is under the generic name of the Skye Terriers but there are some confusion of this breed's.  The actually records of the 16th century tell as the the Skye Terriers are forerunners of the Scottie or vice versa, so people is disagre about it.
Scotties and the West Highland White Terriers are closely related. The Scotties and the West Highland White Terriers forefathers is originated from the Blackmount region of Perthshire and the Moor of Tannoch. Scotties were originally bred to hunt and kill vermin on farms and hunt badgers and foxes in the Highlands of Scotland.
They don't know how old the breed is but the first written record of the dog similar description to the Scottish Terrier is from 1436 when Don Leslie described them in his book "The History of Scotland 1436-1561".
Sir Joshua Reynolds had painted a portrait of a young girl caressing a dog similar in appearance to the mordern day Scottie two hunderd years after the book was writing 1436.

http://www.google.co.za/imgres

When you are alone when two dogs fight and there are no one near you to help you do the following steps.
 Step One
Tie the dog that has been attacked to a nearest tree or pole.
Step Two
Lift the attacker's hind legs with your left hand. (He lose is power when you pick the back legs up).
Step Three
Take your right hand and grab the dog’s collar and twist it so that he starts to choke. If the dog doesn’t have a collar then grabs him at his windpipe and squeeze so hard. (Because he can't breathe he will let go).
Step Four
Take the attacking dog to a quiet place like a room or car or an enclosed part of the garden.
Step Five
Leave the dog other dog tied up well you see what injuries the dog have.
Step Six
Treat the wounds with antibiotic powder or injections may be needed to make sore that there is no infection or permanent damage. If you treat the wounds right there will not be much damage.

If there are some one to help you

Bull Terrier Fighting

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?
Bull Terrier will not start a fight they will take many insults from other dogs before they will attack the other dogs. Bull Terriers are not bullies. Bull Terriers are not very noisy and they don't barking dogs. If a Bull Terrier start to bark then you must know there is something wrong. If you are a caring owner you will make sure that your dog will not get in to a fight. Bull Terriers have the ability to fight to the end. They have the speed power and the strong jaws.

You still get people how bred with Bull Terriers to use the for dog fighting but it is illegal. The criminals like the Bull Terrier characteristics for this dog fighting. Bull Terriers won’t start a fight, al when they will start fighting back if they got hurt badly.

If there are bones or toys lying around and you have two dogs it may cause the dogs to fight. Make sure both dogs get their food in their own bowls. Make sore if you give the dogs their food that is a good distance away from each other.

It is very cut to see when the puppies fight or how they tackle a bigger dog, but you must not encourage it because they will develop the dog desire to fight. You will know if you raised a fighter. If you see the puppy start to fight takes him away from the situation. Do it on calm why not with violins. Bull Terriers are very sensitive to aggression.

If two adult Bull Terriers are fight then it is serious. Their grip is strong and they will kill opponent. Try to separate the dog as fast as possible. Don't scream at the dogs or throw hot water on them it will make it worse.

Training Session for Bull Terriers

http://www.bullieselp.com/Abully01.jpg
Every days training with your dog will make the bond between you and your dog stronger. Teach them first to sit and come to you. It will take a lot of patience from you and your dog. Bull Terrier is very stubborn and will take chances. They are very intelligent and they will try your limits before they start to listen. Stop the training when you get irritated or impatient with the dog because it can affect your bond with the dog. Let the training session be short and not too long.

How to teach your dog to sit

It is very important to teach your dg to sit or come here because if your dog escape from the yard and there are a lot of cars or there is another dog and they start to fight.

If you start to teach your dog how to sit on command, push down on the small back and say sit and give him a biscuit and praise him if he sit. The Dog will jump up very fast but if you disciplining him he will start to sit longer. If you open and close the door let your dog sit because you will need both your hands to open and close the door. If you take your dog for a walk let him sit or stay and stand there until he do it before you walk again.

How to punish your Bull Terrier puppy

You must use your voice tone if you want your puppy to obey your wishes if he don't listen to you tap is hindquarters lightly with a paper or a newspaper. Do not use your hands; because it is there to love and praise him. If you use your hands to punish the puppy he will get confuse, because everything that he needs to make him happy is given by the hand. If you see that the puppy or dog don't listen don't wait to punish him because he will get confuse so do it when you see he do something bad. When you see that he remorse starts to play with him and give him some love.

The Bull Terriers puppies meeting the outside wolrd.

Don't let your puppy go on the street first let him get used to the noise at home first like the vacuum cleaner the polisher and the washing machine and dishwasher. If they get used to the noise don't let them run freely around outside. Strange noise like cars, bikes and other stranger noise can put the puppy self-confidence a severe setback. Do not try to expose the puppy to many noises at a time. Don't introduce your puppy to all your friends at one time do it individually it give the puppy most self-confidence and he will get more used to bigger groups people. Let him get used to people stroke him and play with him because if you take him for a walk people want to stroke him. The puppy happiness and is wellbeing depends on you how you take care of him.

The collars and leads.

All the dogs need collars. You can't buy a puppy a choke chain collars you can buy them nylon or a leather collar. The choke chain is made for the full-grown dogs. In the start the dog may object the collar but you can give him a biscuit or can give him a toy to play with it will take its made of it and he will accept it very restraint. If the dog is used to the caller you can put on a light lead on the collar, but don't pull or drag the lead impatiently if the dog refuses to walk with you. If puppies come together, you must remove the collar because they can strangle one another. You must put a name tag on your dog’s collar. It must have your dog's name on it and your phone number and your address, because if your dog get lost. One thing that you must remember that Bull Terriers is very week with direction and they will get lost. First look at the Safety of the Bull Terrier.

In house today it is very difficult to keep the puppies away from carpets because it is an open plan but you can use child proof gates to get the dog at one area. You must put on a security gate to keep the dog save from any danger in or out the house. If you don't have a fenced you must one up. It must be 1.5 meter high. It will help to keep your dog in your yard. If you want to put in kennel in your yard and you love to garden then you must fence off a part of your yard were you want to put the kennel. When you go out for the day you can put the dog in the kennel so he can do his things, but you can't leave him there if you are there because the dog needs companionship.

The Toys keep the puppies busy for some time, but you must avoided plastic toys because if it broke then the pieces and the sharp ends are very dangerous if they swallowed. They love squeaky toys but if the squeaky toy is broken take it away because it is very dangerous they can swallow it.

Bones

If you give your puppy a bone doesn’t leave him or her alone with the bone because puppies can easily choke. Give your dog Nylon bones they are very good for the dogs. It keeps the dogs teeth clean and it is saving for any dog big or small.
You can give your dog a big marrow bones also, but not other types of bones, because they have very strong jaws and the bones can splinter, and cause serious damage. A Bull Terrier can easy get impatient and try to swallow the bone in. There are many Bull Terrier death of choked on a bone.

Balls

The family and the puppies like to play with a ball and they keep them busy. Make sore the ball is big enough and not to small that the dog can swallow the ball.

How to take care of your Bull Terrier

http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ8w21VhCUmU8D-vMDiF-FupWIcvRvSU0e4W5698STlUIPxquBLEQ

Documentation

If you collect your puppy make sure that you get the registration documents. It will save you a lot of time and you don't have to make unnecessary calls. Only the breeders can register the puppies.

Care and Accommodation

When the puppy leaves the breed he will be helpless and will depend on you to take care of him or her. He will disturb your peace and disrupt your household before established a routine.

Sleeping Arrangements

In the start let the puppy sleep in the kitchen or near your room. You can just a large cardboard box, and later you can replace when it is necessary. The dog's need their own bed like a kennel, box or crate, because they feel a lot saver in their own bed. There must be space in the kennel and make sure it can take your dog's weigh because in a years’ time they can weigh 25kg to 30kg. Use blankets to keep them warm. Make sure the blankets are dry every day and clean.

House Training

Place newspapers from his box to the kitchen door he will almost be house trained. To learn your puppy takes him or her outside to relieve him immediately after waking. If you take him or her out use the same spot. If your dog gets it right to go outside then give them a generous praise. Let your dog move in and out with the back door through the day. Your dog will learn to wake you up if they want to go out the night.

Feeding Arrangements

Get a good place for the food bowl and water bowl were no one will knocked the bowls over. Place a plastic mat under the bowls so if the dog had drop some food it is easily to clean it. Plastic bowls is not good idea for all if there is no food in because the puppies will play with it and they can maybe swallow a piece in and it is very dangerous. Don’t left to food on the ground if they are finished eating because it can get dust on it or it can attract flies also. You can give your puppy a dog biscuit or a rusk to eat before his bed time.

Making A Good Choice When You Buy A Bull Terrier Puppy.

https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRYNfTKIKLs-ezYaraV1iJBk23Cw7I8Jigd5BYotdR_crKEazDD

The temperament of the dog

When you choice a puppy takes someone with you that knows the breed or someone that have bred with them. In the beginning all the puppies will steel your hart and you want all of the puppies. It is when you need some advice from someone. When the breeder and the puppies impress you and the adviser you can then choice your puppy.

I going to give you some tips the help you make a better choice.

The Age of the dog.

When you choice a puppy it is usually between six and eight weeks. It is a big risk if you want a show dog because the puppy can look good at this age, but may never develop into anything grander than a pet.

The Gender of the dog

If you select a puppy take the puppy away from the mother because the puppy will look bigger and more 'flashy".

Select a puppy that is happy. Inquisitive and a puppy that is fat with a short back and good substance. If you see a puppy that is shy and nervous don't pity them, because they will maybe not adapt the rest of the family. It will not be suitable for show dog and they can develop into an aggressive dog.

The Faults

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTN_6yznluEqbh_B3xZ1XZ6Iy4yLlw_6WBWO2oHu1USDPyQxdq4
Do not choose puppies that have mismarked, but if they have other qualities that is outstanding you can choose them. Avoid also the puppies that have inferior fronts and feet that turn in or out.

The Build of the dog

Look to the shoulders and chest of the puppy. The shoulder of the puppies must protrude from the shoulder. The neck of the puppy must be long. The six week old puppy must be square. The front legs must be as long and must be equal both the wide of the chest and the length of the back legs. If the body is short with a deep chest and if it reaches the elbow it will never transform into a narrow, long legged dog. Look for a short back well bent stifles and short hocks. This is good qualities to look for, but it is not easy to find.
Cow hocks are inclined by puppies when they are constantly on their hind legs trying to peep over a fence or barrier. It is naturally because the hindquarters get stronger and with the proper exercise.

The eyes of a puppy
A Bull Terrier eyes are never round it is triangular and must be dark.

The head of the puppy
The head of the puppy must be the deciding factor of choosing a puppy. It must be well filled, with no dip in the bridge of the nose.

The bite of a puppy
It is difficult to tell how the bite will develop at an age of six to eight weeks.  The upper jaw must be protruding at this stage to left enough space for the growth of the lower jaw. The goal is to select a puppy that his bite is not level in three months. They lose their milk teeth at four months.

Choosing A New Puppy Bull Terrier

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS9JADLW1h5Sqob3PG6KBCYm4K3T_oMMfPs2F9RDrddBEtESGKMjA
Step one

Look was the best breeders are where they are located. Shows are important here. You can see how is the winners and you can start study their characteristics and as well their owners character. When you decided on a dog, you will see it is very expensive for the breed. You must remember that you pay for the breeder's expertise, in producing healthy well-shaped, good natured puppies, as free from faults as possible.

Step two

Explain to the breeder how your home look likes to see if you home can accommodate a Bull Terrier.

Step Three

If you can meet both of the puppy parents. If the parent’s appearance and temperament impress you a lot how better is it for you. The breeders always looking for a good home for the puppies were the puppies will be receive love and discipline. Some people only want a Bull Terrier, but they don't train the dog or give them the care they need, so they return the dog back and blame the dog or the breeder for the problem. Sometimes the dog will then suffer a succession of owners and don't get suitable home for the dog and they start to get aggressive temperament.

Step Four

Talk to the whole family and tell them what are their responsibilities, like food, playing with the dog. If everybody know what is there task and accept it you can get a puppy.

The Coat And The Colour Of The Bull Terrier

http://i621.photobucket.com/albums/tt291/Hucklebutt21/rednosegamebredebt.jpg

The Coat

The hair of the Bull Terrier must be short and hard with a good sheen. The hair must lie flat against the taut skin of the dog. Bull Terriers don't have any folds in their coats. In winter the Bull Terriers develop a fine undercoat. Sometimes it have coloured patches know as tick markings. The markings will go away when winter is over.

The Colour

The white dogs have colour patches above their collar. If there are markings elsewhere it known as mismark and is not accepted in show ring. The tick markings is a disadvantage. The Bull Terriers that have white noses and light coloured eyes are classified as albinos.

Bull Terriers colours can be brindle, black and white, red, fawn and tricolour. The most popular coloured of the Bull Terrier is brindle. The coloured Bull Terriers have a white blaze on the head and they also have white chest, have also white under the stomach, they have white socks, and the tip of the tail is white.
If the coloured dog have more white then is coloured he will be penalised. A solid - coloured Bull Terrier is a dog withe out any white marks and is not considered attractive for the show ring so do not mate such a dog with another coloured dog.

The Movement Of The Bull Terrier

The movement stems from the long legs in front and the powerful thrust of and the drive of the back legs. The movement is best see from the side. When the dog move soundly the pads of both of the front feet and back will be clearly seen.

The front  and the back legs should move parallel if you look from the back and from the front. The front legs must reach well out and the back legs move smoothly at the hips and the flexing well at the stifle and hock.

The Tail of the Bull Terrier

The tail of the Bull Terrier must be short and straight. The root of the tail is thick and tapering to a point. The tail is set low and carried horizontally. If the tail is bit higher it means that the hindquarters is weak. The dog's tail can tell in which mood he is. If the dog's tail is between it legs he is frightened. If the dog raise his tail in a curve above his body when becomes excited.

The Bull Terrier Feet

http://alfatauri.pl/zdjecia/wzorzec/feet.jpg
The Bull Terriers possess is small but strong feet with the toes close together, like those of a cat. The back feet is slightly smaller than the forefeet. The toes are not flat but bent, and the dog walk on his toes rather than on his pads. The pastern above the front paw must be strong and straight so that it forms a straight line with the rest of the leg.

The Hindquarters of a Bull Terrier

The Bull terrier’s power and propelling force lies in the hind legs. Therefore they are muscular and strong. It is important that the muscular attachment of the various bones is correct for the facilitate of movement and ensure a proper stance. To have the correct angles between the bones each must be the correct length.

The upper thigh as well as the second thigh should be well developed and very muscular. Were the hock is joint with the second thigh and the toe is short and strong. When the hock is turn inward when viewed from behind are referred to as a ‘cow hock’ and spoil the look of the hindquarters. Bull Terriers suffer from hip dysplasia, but slipping patella’s’ are quite common. The patella is small and held in position by muscles and ligaments. Its function is to keep the bones of the leg acting in unison. If a patella slips the knee-joint will give towards the outside and waken the hind leg.

Wednesday, 4 June 2014

The Chest of the Bull Terrier

The chest must be well – developed and round enough to provide sufficient space for the efficient functioning of the lungs. The chest of the Bull Terrier is deep in the front and should comprise fifty per cent of the Bull Terrier’s height from the ground to the withers. The chest curves upwards to where the abdomen begins. As a simple guide: the chest should be level with the dog’s elbows.

The Back Of The Bull Terrier

A Bull Terrier have a sort powerful back with a straight top, that rises slightly from the rear of the loins to pass over the rump.

English Bull Terrier 1
http://www.daxtonsfriends.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/English-Bull-Terrier-1.jpg

Seen from above, the back should appear to be full, without any flattening along the sides. Seen from above, the hips should appear slightly narrower than the shoulders.

The Forequarters of a Bull Terrier

The Shoulders must be strong and muscular, but not loading. The angel of the shoulder blade and the upper arm ought to be 90 degree. The shoulder blades are wide and flat and held closely to the chest wall. They have very pronounced backward slope of the front edge and from the bottom to the top forming almost a right angle with upper arm. The breast bone of the Bull Terrier should stand out slightly beyond the linkage of the shoulder blade and upper arm. When the angel of the shoulder blade and upper arm is greater than 90 degree the shoulder will be too vertical. The length of the upper arm and shoulder blade must be the same.

http://www.bulavardbullterriers.com/images/page_214.jpg
If the upper arm is too short the result will be a vertical shoulder. Any deviation from the correct angle or length of the bones will restrict the dog length of stride.  Well – assembled forequarters are usually accompanied by good hindquarters.

A good neck is muscular, long and slightly arched near the summit. It is broad near the shoulders and gradually narrows towards the head. Such a neck will hold the dog head up firmly. The length of each of the seven neck vertebrae and the cartilage in between determines whether the neck will be short or long.

A Bull Terrier nose is a black – pigmented with large nostrils, but some Bull Terriers have a pink or Partially – pigmented noses. The puppies are born with white nose, after three to four weeks the colour starts to change. At dog shows will a whit nose or weakly pigmented will count against the dog.

The ears of the Bull Terrier

The ears of a puppy will give an indication of its size when he is an adult. When a puppy of four to six weeks has erect ears, it is an indication that he will not grow up to be a very big dog. The large dogs have ears that even at three to four months have difficulty in standing erect. The expression on the Bull Terrier face will depend to a great extent on how and where the ears are placed on the head. The ears should stand completely erect, because in the ten-to-two’ position the dog loses much of his character and his appearance becomes clumsy and coarse.

Bull Terriers eyes

The Bull Terriers eyes are different from other dogs. The eyelids are triangular with the outside angle extending towards the base of the ear. The eyes are deeply set in the sockets for protection of the eye. The iris colour is either black or dark brown. Light brown eyes do appear, but are not favoured as they are sensitive to bright light and may become red and swollen detracting from the dog’s overall appearance. In shows if a Bull Terrier have blue eyes they are disqualify.

The muzzle of the Bull Terrier

http://alfatauri.pl/zdjecia/wzorzec/mouth.jpg

The muzzle must be strong square and a firm lower jaw with a powerful bite. There must be forty – two teeth and the upper teeth should bite firmly over the lower teeth in a scissor bite. If the lower jaw is too long, we refer to it as undershot or a fish mouth and if the lower jaw is to short we call it the parrot – mouth or overshot. When the upper and lower incisors fit exactly n top of each anther we call it the pincer bite.

For the show the manner how the teeth bite is very important.  For the breeder is it a very challenge to produce a Bull Terrie with a good arched and a strong lower jaw with the right bite. The dog’s bite is very important when they judging the dog but not be over – emphasised when considering the whole dog. The teeth should be white, strong and fit well into the broad of the mouth. The lips must fit neatly around the teeth.

The head ought to curve from the top of the skull to the tip of the nose. The Bull Terriers nose is more curved than the rest of the profile. The front of the head is oval with a clean profile. Between the ears it is flattened. The area under the eyes is full and without hollows and indents. The face is strongly boned, giving the head an appearance of power without looking coarse. Seen as a whole the head resembles an egg or a rugby ball. Unlike other breeds, the Bull Terrier does not have a ‘stop’ which separates the forehead from the nose. The head must be deep, long and strong but not coarse.
